Work From Home…Pros & Cons

Note

I’ve been ‘working from home’ as a Solopreneur / Online Entrepreneur since 2007, when I opened my first online business called: ‘Virtual Managing Associates’. So yes, when I write about ‘working from home’…It comes from the heart & experience!

Let’s Get This Straight Working From Home Gives You Flexibility.

That’s a Good Thing.

That Said, It Will Also Demand a Lot From You in Return.

Working from home is pretty much everybody’s dreams. Your commute is the length of your hallway. Your snack drawer is the entire pantry. Your break is tea or coffee on the patio and your co-workers are your loving dogs & cats.

Sounds like a dream doesn’t it? Wrong! Why? Because it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be.

Let Me Explain…

Before we go any further, let’s explain the difference between different titles:

I Am Self-Employed

Earning income directly from one’s own business, trade, or profession rather than as a specified salary or wages from an employer.

~ Merriam Webster

I Am a Freelancer

A person who acts independently without being affiliated with or authorized by an organization. [This person] pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer.

~ Merriam Webster

I Am a Solopreneur

An entrepreneur who works alone, “solo,” running their business single-handedly. They might have contractors for hire, yet have full responsibility for the running of their business.

~ Urban Dictionary

As you can read, there’s a lot of different titles out there…Meaning pretty much the same thing, give and take.

So yes, you are working from home and managing an Online business, i.e. as yourself offering your services, you are a business. So, what to be aware here (before your leap of faith) is that it’s important to understand the pros & cons of your decision.

Yes, setting up your home office may be a dream come true. But then, also realize that there will be a price to pay for your ‘home’ freedom!

Pros

You are truly, truly independent. It’s you and your home office. It’s you alone in front of your screen, with nobody telling you what to do when and how. It’s Nirvana. You can now work in peace, with nobody looking over your shoulders. Freedom finally…!
Working from home also means, that you will learn (to your advantage) the following:

  • How to rely on yourself and nobody else
  • Self-discipline – A 15 minute break is a 15 minute break
  • Focus – Put on your headphone and focus on the job at hand
  • Concentration – Don’t let anybody or ‘thing’ disturb you. You want to get the job done.

You’ll Get ‘Stuff’ Done

You will! That is, as long as you are true to yourself and not sneaking off to watch some cooking show when you should be promoting your services on Social Media! So yes, you can actually be very productive when you work from home.

Commuting? You Are Kidding, Right?

How much of this should I explain? Your commute is now stepping over your dog…Because he’s laying in the middle of the hallway!
Your commute is walking into your office with a smile, hopefully, rested and ready to go.
So yeah, dish the car, busses, and train. You now have this under control.

Your Schedule Is Your Own

Remember, if you are now working as an online entrepreneur and your schedule is now your own. The only person you answer to is yourself ….You want to start at the crack of dawn, do it! You’re a night owl, why not! Remember, you are now accountable to yourself and nobody else. Do the work you said you were going to do. Simple.

Health Benefits

You don’t have to work anymore, with a co-worker that’s decided to be a martyr and come in sick. Get my drift? You know what I’m talking about! Yes, the one that keeps on showing up at work, with a bad cough, runny nose and worse… Those days are gone. What’s important here, is that you take care of yourself. That’s your health benefit.

You’ll Save Money

You will. You may not see it at first, but give it a month or two and you’ll see what I mean. Now, how will this happen?

Well for starters, think wardrobe! No need to show up wearing the latest fashion, hairdo and on. No suits, ties and polished shoes.

And how about coffee? Yes, coffee! How many cups per day did you have, and how much did it cost? How about the office coffee pool…Remember, it always tasted like something that was brewed a few days ago?

And let’s not forget lunch! Did you use to hit the restaurant every day, or, bring in your own? If it was the restaurant, you have just saved yourself a small fortune!

My Favorite One…You Will Learn to Become More Independent

You will now be working by yourself. No colleagues a few desks away, or a tech team one floor down.

You are now on your own. This means you will need to ‘develop’ the necessary skills to figure out ‘stuff’ on your own. And it’s empowering!

Of course, don’t do like some of us do, as in searching needlessly on the web, when you can reach out to virtual coworker… Still, you will see a change in own you handle roadblocks and how well you learn from them.

Cons

Don’t Forget to Clock Out!

I know it may sound weird, but that’s the thing. You are working from home, and you forget. It’s that simple. You see, what happens is that ‘sometimes’ you get so involved in what you are working on… You just keep on working, because it doesn’t feel like work!

I know this sounds weird. But it will happen, as you are now working with subjects that are of real interest to you!

Take it from an old pro, been there done that a few times… Learn to move away from your desk and enjoy your home life also!

You Feel Lonely, and Totally out of the Loop

And it’s normal. Here you are now working from home, with really nobody else to speak to except maybe your dogs and cats!

And if you do find somebody that is interested in what you are doing, they most probably don’t understand half of what you are talking about! Don’t despair, its part of the game.

How do you fix this? Find an accountability partner or an acquaintance just a geeky as you’ve become. It’s amazing the good it will do!

Last but Not Least…

Expect to become a total geek in your own domain… And be proud of it all! You’ve decided to move forward and become the master of your domain! Then stick to it and make it good!

Stick with it – you will amaze yourself!
